The Uptowner: 2 HOMES
IN 1

Our client had recently retired and wanted to downsize and move away from the hustle-and-bustle of the city to enjoy a modern rural lifestyle (ie. creature comforts with privacy and a great view). They particularly liked the look of the “Uptowner” which features a private bedroom zone that’s separated from the living area by a galley kitchen and verandahs. The prominent roof line, with large gables and raked ceilings was another detail they liked.

We modified the standard design by introducing a large wraparound verandah that started on the northern side and met the main bedroom on the east. The granny flat was also elevated to suit the prevailing flood conditions.

Towards the end of construction their family circumstances changed and we were asked to design and build an additional 1-bedroom self-contained extension. It was a bespoke design with ease-of-access, good natural light and cross-ventilation in mind. The interior features high cathedral ceilings and several windows to help give the space a brighter, spacious & happier feel. The central deck that divides both dwellings is a friendly common area that captures the winter sun. By carefully mimicking the gable roof and extending the deck to fully wrap around the front of the granny flat we were able to create an integrated look and the end-result is stunning.
